What is Sodium Lactate and why we use it in our soaps

What Is It?

Sodium lactate is a naturally derived ingredient that comes from fermented plant sugars. It is a clear, odourless gooey liquid (a bit like liquid glycerine that you use for baking and making sweets.) It’s eco-friendly, biodegradable, and widely used in skincare because it works hard—without making a fuss.

Why use it? What are the skin benefits?

We use a very small amount of Sodium Lactate in our soap bars for it's skin loving benefits:

  • Steers moisture toward the skin’s surface—from both the air around you and deep reserves within— helping to keep skin hydrated and happy

  • Boosts hydration - helping skin feel smoother and more elastic.

  • Leaves no greasy residue—just clean, comfortable skin

  • Sodium Lactate has a mild keratolytic effect which sounds scarier than it is. Keratolytic effect just means 'gentle exfoliation.' Think of it like getting rid of the gunk on your skin from hard work, sweat, dust and grime.
  • Non-Comedogenic and Acne-Friendly - Sodium Lactate is rated 0/5 for comedogenicity, meaning it won’t clog pores or trigger breakouts.

  • Sodium Lactate is suitable for all skin types - Oily, Dry, Combination, Sensitive etc.
  • It's also Vegan-friendly and biodegradable

So there you have it, Sodium Lactate in a nutshell So there you have it—sodium lactate in a nutshell: a humble ingredient with heavyweight impact. It quietly strengthens your soap and helps keep your skin balanced and hydrated—no matter what your day throws at you.
