Why does pot pourri lose its smell?
Traditional pot pourri gets its fragrance from essential oils and naturally scented dried botanicals. Over time, these fragrant oils slowly evaporate into the air.
That's exactly what they're supposed to do.
As the essential oils disperse, the fragrance gradually becomes softer until eventually you can barely notice it at all. The botanicals themselves are still beautiful, but the scent has simply faded.
This happens with every type of pot pourri, whether it's handmade or shop bought.
How long should pot pourri smell for?
There's no exact answer because it depends on where your pot pourri is displayed.
A bowl sitting in a warm, sunny room will lose its fragrance much more quickly than one placed in a cooler hallway or bedroom.
Air movement also makes a difference. If your bowl is close to a radiator, open window or frequently used doorway, the fragrance will naturally fade sooner.
Can you make pot pourri smell again?
Yes.
One of the simplest ways to revive pot pourri is by adding a few drops of matching botanical refresher oil.
Rather than replacing the botanicals, simply scatter a few drops across the dried flowers and herbs, then gently stir the mixture to distribute the fragrance evenly.
After a few minutes, the fragrance will begin to return.

Should you throw pot pourri away?
