Your Skin Microbiome and Why Your Soap Matters

Most of us don't give much thought to what's living on our skin. But your skin is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and microbes — a whole community working quietly to keep it healthy. This is your skin microbiome, and it's worth looking after.

So what does the skin microbiome actually do?

Think of it as your skin's first line of defence. It fights off harmful bacteria, keeps the skin barrier strong, and helps your skin stay calm and balanced. When it's disrupted, you'll often feel it — tightness, dryness, or skin that just seems a bit off. The soap you use every day can be a bigger factor in this than most people realise.

The problem with most commercial soaps

Conventional soaps and body washes are designed to strip — and they're very good at it. Along with the dirt and grime, they take the beneficial bacteria your skin actually needs. Harsh detergents like SLS, synthetic fragrances, and antibacterial additives all push your skin's natural pH out of balance, leaving it more vulnerable than before you washed.

I learnt this the hard way. For years I couldn't work out why my skin felt dry and uncomfortable after showering — switching products every few weeks only made things worse. It turned out the ingredients in those products were the problem all along.

Why handmade soap is different

Handmade soap, made with natural oils and without synthetic detergents, works with your skin rather than against it:

  • It cleanses without stripping — leaving the natural oils that beneficial microbes depend on
  • It keeps its natural glycerin — a gentle humectant that draws moisture to the skin. Mass-produced soap has this removed, which is part of why it can feel so drying
  • No harsh additives — no antibacterial chemicals, no artificial foaming agents, nothing that throws your skin's balance off
  • Nourishing plant oils — ingredients like olive oil and shea butter support the skin barrier and give your microbiome a healthy environment to thrive in

What to look for

The good news is it's not complicated. Look for a soap made with natural oils and butters, free from sulphates and synthetic detergents, scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, and gentle enough for everyday use.

Our soaps are made to exactly those standards — small batch, handmade in the Usk Valley, with botanicals chosen for what they genuinely do for skin. If you're not sure where to start, our Original Herb Soap is a lovely introduction: straightforward, effective, and kind to skin.

Your skin is a living ecosystem. It doesn't need complicated chemistry — just a gentle, honest bar of soap.
