What is Marshmallow — and why does it belong in your skincare? - Usk Valley Herbs

What is Marshmallow — and why does it belong in your skincare?

First things first — this has absolutely nothing to do with the squidgy white sweets. (We promise.)

Marshmallow — Malva sylvestris, or common mallow — is a beautiful, soft-leaved plant with a long history in herbal medicine. The clue is in the name: the sweet was actually named after the plant, not the other way around. Who knew?

What makes it so lovely for skin

The plant is packed with mucilage — a naturally occurring gel-like substance that forms when mallow is steeped in water. It creates a gentle, soothing film on the skin that helps lock in moisture, calm irritation, and support your skin barrier without any heaviness or greasiness. Think of it as a quiet, comforting ingredient that just gets on with the job.

It's especially good for dry, sensitive, or easily-irritated skin — the kind that needs a bit of gentle reassurance rather than anything too stimulating.

How we use it at Usk Valley Herbs

You'll find Malva sylvestris in our Lavender Breeze soap bar, where it works alongside lavender to leave skin feeling soft and calm rather than stripped.

And we're currently working on something new — a botanical bath soak using dried mallow flowers as the featured botanical. The flowers carry the same soothing mucilage properties, but they're also just quietly beautiful in the water. We'll share more on that soon.

Why we keep coming back to it

Malva sylvestris isn't a trend ingredient. It doesn't shout. It just does reliable, gentle work — and that's exactly the kind of ingredient we love to formulate with.
